What Do the Registration Figures Show?
In FY 2026–27 (1 April to 30 September 2026), the stated activity scope contains 32,667 classified registrations: 20,714 Private Limited, 10,276 LLP and 1,677 OPC. These are six-month incorporation records within the stated scope, not a full-year result or evidence of business success.
LLP or Private Limited for a Trading, Wholesale or Retail Business?
Consider who will own the inventory, contribute working capital and make purchasing decisions. Partners operating a distributor or wholesale business can compare LLP and Private Limited ownership arrangements. Plans for outside equity or a chain of outlets may change the decision.
OPC for an E-commerce Seller or Solo Trader?
A solo trader can assess an OPC when a company structure is appropriate. If you intend to add an owner, compare that plan with starting a Private Limited company. Selling online does not, by itself, settle which structure suits your business.
Which Business Structure Should You Choose?
Private Limited: assess when share-based ownership and outside equity investment are planned. LLP: assess partnership-based ownership and partner-funded operations. OPC: assess for a sole owner seeking a company structure, allowing for future ownership changes.
Compare ownership, funding, taxation and ongoing compliance costs before deciding. Registration popularity is useful context; your business plans should guide the choice.

Coverage notes: Calculations use MCA monthly incorporation reporting periods from 1 April 2016 to 30 September 2026. FY 2021–22 is missing November 2021, January 2022 and March 2022. FY 2026–27 covers April–September 2026 only. Records without usable activity codes are excluded from sector allocation, including LLP records in October 2018 without activity codes. Code definitions changed over time; the stated legacy/newer scope is retained. No missing records are estimated. The sector table includes Private Limited, LLP and OPC only; Public/Other Companies, Foreign Companies, Proprietorships and ordinary Partnerships are excluded. Private Limited excludes OPC. These sector tables are not the Company-only state tables, which exclude LLPs.

Wholesale and retail trading registration: common questions
How do I register a wholesale and retail trading business in India?
For a company, use the MCA incorporation process; for an LLP, use the LLP incorporation process and prepare the LLP agreement. See the Documents Required for Company Registration in India: PVT LTD and OPC or LLP Registration in India: Process, Documents, Costs and Agreement. Check activity-specific operating requirements separately.
Which structure should an e-commerce seller or trading business assess?
Assess ownership, inventory funding and investor participation. Wholesale, retail, import-export and online selling describe activities rather than a single mandatory entity type.
Does this table identify every import-export company?
No. It covers selected trade classifications; it does not isolate every importer, exporter or marketplace seller.
A practical example for your structure decision
A wholesale distributor holding stock and a retailer opening several outlets have different working-capital needs. Compare supplier credit, ownership of inventory and expansion funding alongside the number of owners.
