The definitions differ substantially, so this is not a like-for-like film or media growth series. Legacy division 22 also overlaps the earlier Manufacturing table.

What do the figures show?

For FY 2026–27 (April–September 2026), the broader activity scope in this table contains 3,364 registrations: 2,028 Private Limited, 1,108 LLP and 228 OPC. These figures cover the stated activity group and should not be presented as a separate count of every specific business mentioned in this guide.

Which structure should you assess?

Consider ownership of content rights, brand assets and project revenue. A partner-run production studio and a media company introducing outside shareholders need different ownership arrangements.

  • Private Limited: assess share-based ownership and planned outside equity participation.
  • LLP: assess partnership-based ownership and partner-funded operations.
  • OPC: assess a company structure for a sole owner, taking future co-owners into account.

Compare ownership, funding, taxation and ongoing compliance, alongside the activity’s permitted legal forms. Sector popularity should inform your research, not decide the structure.

Private Limited or LLP for a production house?

Compare share-based investment with partner-funded project work and contractual profit sharing. Record how the business will hold content rights and admit new owners. Use the figures as broad classification context, not a measure of film industry growth.

Coverage notes: Calculations use MCA monthly incorporation reporting periods from 1 April 2016 to 30 September 2026. FY 2021–22 is missing November 2021, January 2022 and March 2022. FY 2026–27 covers April–September 2026 only. Records without usable activity codes are excluded from sector allocation, including LLP records in October 2018 without activity codes. Code definitions changed over time; the stated legacy/newer scope is retained. No missing records are estimated. The sector table includes Private Limited, LLP and OPC only; Public/Other Companies, Foreign Companies, Proprietorships and ordinary Partnerships are excluded. Private Limited excludes OPC. These sector tables are not the Company-only state tables, which exclude LLPs.

Media and production-house registration: common questions

How do I register a media and production-house business in India?

For a company, use the MCA incorporation process; for an LLP, use the LLP incorporation process and prepare the LLP agreement. See the Documents Required for Company Registration in India: PVT LTD and OPC or LLP Registration in India: Process, Documents, Costs and Agreement. Check activity-specific operating requirements separately.

Which structure suits a film production or content studio?

Compare ownership of content rights, project contributions and admission of investors. Partner-funded production work differs from a share-funded media business.

Are these only film production companies?

No. The scope includes broader publishing and entertainment activity groups, with changes between older and newer classifications.

A practical example for your structure decision

A production house should clarify ownership of scripts, recordings and distribution rights as well as project funding. A one-person creator and a venture with several equity investors need different ownership plans.

Data checked: 8 October 2026. The figures describe available incorporation records; they do not measure active businesses or explain founders’ reasons for choosing a structure.
