Registration Pulse — August 2024 to August 2026: What the MCA’s Own Numbers Show
In short
A plain look at MCA’s own August incorporation data for 2024, 2025 and 2026 — how many Private Limited companies, LLPs and OPCs were registered, and what shifted.
Every month, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) publishes a plain list of every company, LLP and foreign entity registered in India that month, straight from its own records. This article compares three such lists, all for the same month — August — across three years: 2024, 2025 and 2026.
The headline numbers
| Aug 2024 | % | Aug 2025 | % | Aug 2026 | % | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private Limited | 13,656 | 67.0% | 18,777 | 69.3% | 20,107 | 64.7% |
| OPC | 902 | 4.4% | 1,256 | 4.6% | 1,301 | 4.2% |
| Public | 138 | 0.7% | 132 | 0.5% | 103 | 0.3% |
| Companies (total) | 14,696 | 72.1% | 20,165 | 74.4% | 21,511 | 69.2% |
| LLPs | 5,700 | 27.9% | 6,939 | 25.6% | 9,562 | 30.8% |
| Foreign companies | 0 | 0.0% | 5 | 0.0% | 7 | 0.0% |
| Grand total | 20,396 | 100% | 27,109 | 100% | 31,080 | 100% |
Total registrations grew from 20,396 in August 2024 to 27,109 in August 2025 — a jump of 33%. By August 2026, it reached 31,080 — up another 15% from the year before.
LLP is becoming more popular
Founders usually choose between two structures: a Company (Private Limited, OPC or Public) or an LLP. Here’s that choice, three ways:
| Companies | LLP | |
|---|---|---|
| Aug 2024 | 14,696 (72%) | 5,700 (28%) |
| Aug 2025 | 20,165 (74%) | 6,939 (26%) |
| Aug 2026 | 21,511 (69%) | 9,562 (31%) |
In August 2026, out of every 100 founders choosing between the two, 31 picked LLP — the highest share in three years, up from 26 the year before. LLP registrations grew from 6,939 to 9,562 between 2025 and 2026 — a 38% increase — while company registrations (Private Limited + OPC + Public) grew from 20,165 to 21,511 in the same period, just 7%. LLPs usually cost less to run every year and don’t need a minimum starting capital, but they also can’t easily raise money from outside investors later — worth knowing before choosing.
Private Limited is still everyone’s first choice
Out of every 100 registrations of any kind (companies + LLPs), how many are Private Limited?
→ About 65 in August 2026, 69 in August 2025, 67 in August 2024.
This dipped slightly in 2026 — not because Private Limited registrations fell (they actually grew every year: 13,656 → 18,777 → 20,107), but because LLPs grew even faster and took a bigger slice of the total, as the LLP comparison above shows.
OPC hasn’t caught on in a big way
OPC (One Person Company) was introduced so a solo founder wouldn’t need a second shareholder. Registrations rose from 902 in 2024 to 1,256 in 2025 to 1,301 in 2026 — growing in number, but its share has stayed essentially flat at 6.1%, 6.2% and 6.0%. It remains a niche choice, not a growing one.
Public companies are becoming rare
Public company registrations fell from 138 in August 2024 to 132 in 2025 to 103 in 2026 — both in number and in share, down from 0.94% to 0.48%, less than half of where it started. Very few businesses register directly as a public company anymore; most that eventually go public start as Private Limited and convert later.
What kind of businesses are people starting?
| Type of business | Aug 2024 | Aug 2025 | Aug 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer / IT & software | 11.6% | 12.1% | 14.1% |
| Wholesale trade | 9.4% | 9.4% | 10.0% |
| Retail trade | 6.5% | 6.6% | 5.4% |
| Real estate | 4.6% | 4.4% | 4.3% |
| Education | 4.4% | 4.2% | 4.5% |
IT and software keeps climbing — about 1 in every 9 new companies in 2024, closer to 1 in every 7 by 2026. Retail trade’s share has actually dipped from 6.5% to 5.4%.
Among LLPs specifically, real estate is the single largest category by far — 13.7% in 2024, easing to 10.9% by 2026 — even as wholesale trade (8.7% → 10.4%) and IT (7.3% → 8.4%) gained ground.
In simple words
Companies and LLPs registered in India in August: 20,396 in 2024, 27,109 in 2025, 31,080 in 2026. Private Limited is still the most popular choice overall, but LLP is steadily taking a bigger share of the total than before. OPC has stayed at about 6% of new companies for three years. Public company registration keeps shrinking. IT/software continues to be the fastest-growing type of new business.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find how many companies are registered in India each month?
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs publishes a Monthly Information Bulletin on the corporate sector under Data and Reports on mca.gov.in. It reports companies and LLPs registered during the month, active and closed totals, and breakdowns by state and economic activity. The MCA also publishes month-wise master lists of companies and LLPs incorporated.
What is the MCA Monthly Information Bulletin?
The Monthly Information Bulletin is an official report from India's Ministry of Corporate Affairs summarising the corporate sector for a month. It covers the number of new companies and LLPs registered, the total number of active, inactive and closed companies, and breakdowns by state, economic activity and capital. It is released some weeks after the month ends.
Does the number of companies incorporated equal the number of active businesses?
No. Incorporation counts show how many companies and LLPs were registered in a period, not how many are operating. Some newly registered companies never start business and are later struck off by the Registrar of Companies. To judge the health of the corporate sector, read incorporation figures together with the active and closed company totals in the same bulletin.
Are One Person Companies counted in MCA company Registration data?
Yes. In MCA reports, One Person Companies are companies under the Companies Act, 2013, so they are usually counted within the total companies figure, and bulletins often show them separately as a sub-category. LLPs are registered under a different law, the LLP Act, 2008, and are reported as a separate figure.
